Calliandra surinamensis is a low branching evergreen tropical shrub that is named after Suriname, a country in Northern South America. The plant usually has complexly branched multiple trunks and grows to a height of about 5 metres, although many sources suggest that it only attains a height of 3 metres. Left unpruned it grows long thin branches that eventually droop down onto the ground.

Traditional plant breeding methods were applied to develop the CANNOVA series with the aim of producing varieties that could be used not only in subtropical and tropical climates where cannas originally evolved, but also in cooler summer climates. The CANNOVA series was developed by Takii Europe B.V., plant breeder in the Netherlands.
Canna patens (Roscoe) Tb. Tanaka is a species of the Canna genus; small sized; green foliage, ovoid shaped, spreading habit; triangular stems, coloured green; spikes of flowers are upright, yellow with a wide red margin, staminodes are long and narrow, edges regular, petals yellow, partial self-cleaning; fertile both ways, self-pollinating and also true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white; tillering is prolific.
Canna ‘Bengal Tiger’ is an Italian Group canna cultivar with variegated foliage; plant height 190 cm; foliage height 140 cm; upright stems and gently spreading leaves; ovoid foliage, background of green (137A); veins variegated yellow (mostly 13B), but paler in places (13D); maroon edge to leaf; staminodes, labellum and stamen bright orange (28B) blushed a darker, reddish (32A) in places; yellow (15A) on edges; stigma deep orange-red; petals strongly flushed red. The flower has a crumpled silk appearance; seed and pollen has very low fertility levels; rhizomes thick, up to 3 cm in diameter.
Clerodendrum incisum ‘Macrosiphon,’ sometimes referred to as “musical note,” strikes a winning chord in the small-shrub orchestra. This plant is not one of the well-known species in the large clerodendrum group. And unusual for a clerodendrum, it makes my “short shrub” list at 3 to 5 feet tall and four to five feet wide. It needs little pruning. This is a repeat bloomer and produces flowers almost monthly, if left unsheared.
Clerodendrum paniculatum was first described in 1767 by the ‘father’ of modern biological nomenclature – the Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus. The species epithet refers to the large ‘paniculate’ clusters of flowers (inflorescences), the feature which makes this such a visually-striking plant. The pagoda flower is commonly encountered in the Asian tropics, where it is popular as an ornamental and known for its medicinal uses.
